MTB Tour – From Kaisersesch to Ulmen and back
The medium-difficulty mountain bike tour winds its way for around 36 kilometres through the Endert Valley from Kaisersesch through the slate quarry in Leienkaul and past several waterfalls to the Ulmen Maar and back to the starting point in Kaisersesch.
After just five kilometres, you reach the slate quarry in Leienkaul - a highlight of this tour. High-quality roofing slate was mined here until 1959, when a major water inrush put an end to mining. With a depth of up to 205 metres, the highest slate dump in Germany offers an impressive view and invites you to take a short break with a great view - even if you have only covered a few kilometres.
The tour continues past the ‘Rausch’ ('rush') waterfall, which plunges over seven metres into the valley. After twelve kilometres, a narrow bridge leads over the river Endert, which is why the valley is also known as ‘the valley of the wild Endert’. About halfway along the route, you reach the maar and the Jungferweiher pond in Ulmen. There you can visit the castle ruins above the maar. From there, you have a view over the Ulmen maar and can recharge your batteries for the second part of the cycle tour.
The tour leads back past Höchstberg and Laubach before returning to the starting point in Kaisersesch shortly after Masburg. The tour is over, having passed several highlights and covered around 36 metres in altitude.
